Points Opportunity!


Richard Heuer, M.D., from Cardiothoracic Surgical Associates of Lake Cumberland, offered a lot of helpful information about why losing weight is so important to heart health.  If you were not able to attend the February 4th meeting, or maybe just need a refresher, please take some time to watch the video and review the materials he provided.

Don't forget tonight's meeting!



The meeting for Monday, February 25, will be "An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure" presented by Jamie Lee, RN, CDE, Diabetes Education Coordinator for Lake Cumberland District Health Department.  Lee will be discussing the importance of food in relation to your overall health.  Every three seconds someone is diagnosed with diabetes, and of the people diagnosed with type II diabetes, 80 to 90 percent are also diagnosed as obese.  Since there is a link between obesity and diabetes, she will also be discussing diabetes basics: risk factors, signs and symptom, and prevention. 


Please make plans to attend each Monday evening.  Weigh-ins will begin at 4:45 pm with the program following at 5:30 pm in the Conference Centers on the basement level of Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

Dr. Richard Heuer, M.D.


Dr. Heuer is a cum laude graduate of the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida.  He received his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine in Miami, Florida and completed his general surgery residency at Los Angeles County – University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, where he also served as Chief Resident.  Dr. Heuer completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.  He is board-certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery.

Cathi Roskind, RN, CBN is the bariatric program director with Commonwealth Bariatric Center.  She has worked as a bariatric nurse since 2001, following many years of critical care nursing.

Cathi fully understands what it is like to battle obesity. She is a weight loss surgery patient herself (2002), which helps to enhance her professional knowledge in bariatrics. She also works as a Bariatric Legal Nurse Consultant; was on the ASMBS Task Force committee for RN credentialing in the bariatric nursing specialty.  Cathi was one of the first nurses in the State of Kentucky to become specialized in the bariatric nursing specialty and was a member of the Chairman’s Council for Obesity Action Coalition. She is an Associate Member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and is the founding member of the HOPE Committee, a group of patient volunteers who raise funds for donation to Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) that promotes obesity awareness, specifically childhood obesity awareness issues. Cathi is a certified LAP-BAND Champion.

POP Points Details

We encourage all of you to be taking advantage of the many opportunities available through the POP Contest to earn points!  For each 35 points you earn, you will receive a POP Incentive Prize!  We'll be awarding these prizes at the weekly weigh-ins and meetings.

Be sure to bring your completed exercise tracker cards with you to the weekly meetings, or email marketing.lcrh@gmail.com to make other arrangements.  We will also award points for weighing in at alternate locations, so be sure to have someone working there fill in the location and initial next to your weekly weight in your POP Participant Book.

Earn points for each of the following:
  • Weekly Group Weigh-Ins & Meetings - 5 points each week
  • Alternative Weekly Weigh-Ins - 2 points each week
  • Online Activities - 1 point each
  • Exercise Trackers - 10 points per completed card

The speaker for Monday, February 4, will be Perry Brown, PhD, Licensed Clinical Psychologist.  Dr. Brown’s program, “Me First,” will focus on the psychology of weight loss – why we do what we do and what we can do to start making healthier choices. 

Dr. Brown will discuss a number of issues, including: how our busy lives make us unhealthy and fat; the importance of a healthy balance in life and the importance of loving ourselves; the value of rest and exercise; and the importance of relationships and how they affect us.  He will also examine what happens when food is our drug of choice.

Congratulations & Points Opportunity!

 

Congratulations to everyone who earned their first POP Points Incentive Prize at Monday night's meeting!
After reviewing everyone's points, we decided to award incentives at 35 points, so many of you are VERY close!  We'll continue tracking your points and award prizes at the weekly meetings each time you reach 35 points (35, 70, 105, etc.).

Keep up the great work!  Remember, you earn points for coming to weekly meetings, weighing in, working out with Community Partners, and taking advantage of online activities!
