Veronica Boley to discuss planning meals with affordable healthy foods

“Eating healthy on a budget” is the topic for this week’s Pounds Off Pulaski (POP) meeting.  The meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, March 17, in the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Conference Center on the basement level of the East Tower.

Many people find it challenging to purchase and prepare healthful foods without breaking the bank.  Our guest speaker for Monday night is Veronica Boley, APRN, CDE, Endocrinology Center of Lake Cumberland.  Boley will be discussing the importance of food in relation to your overall health, focusing on healthful foods that are also affordable. She will provide information on the difference between good carbs and bad carbs, how to save money as you plan your meals, as well as the best ways to preserve garden vegetables so you can have them available all year. Recipes will be provided, and participants will have the opportunity to sample some of those delicious, healthful foods.

Since there is a link between obesity and diabetes, Boley will also be discussing diabetes basics: risk factors, signs and symptom, and prevention.

During the 12-week POP challenge, weekly meetings are held each Monday with weigh-ins beginning at 5:00 p.m. Individuals who are unable to attend the meetings each week may watch the programs online by visiting www.PoundsOffPulaski.blogspot.com.

“We want to remind participants who have filled their exercise tracker cards and have had them certified by our fitness partners to bring them to the next meeting so we can get their POP Points updated and they can get their incentive prizes,” said Susan Ramsey Wilson, director of marketing and community relations at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

“Our final weigh-in is just around the corner,” said Wilson. “Monday, March 31 is the final day! POP participants can stop by the hospital anytime between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. to weigh.”

Wilson noted that 1st and 2nd place male and female prizes will be awarded, based on the percentage of weight lost.  The cash prizes of $500 for first and $300 for second prize will be presented to the winners at the Somerset-Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce meeting on Tuesday, May 6.

The meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, February 17, in the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Conference Center on the basement level of the East Tower.

Dr. Brown will discuss a number of issues, including: how our busy lives make us unhealthy and overweight; the importance of a healthy balance in life and the importance of loving ourselves; the value of rest and exercise; and the importance of relationships and how they affect us.  He will also examine what happens when food is our drug of choice.

The Unconventional Home Gym

Patricia Burton, Lake Cumberland District Health Department Health Educator III, will give helpful hints on exercising in your own home.

Some people are concerned because they can’t afford a gym membership or they may feel their neighborhoods aren't safe for walking, jogging, or biking.  Monday’s “Unconventional Home Gym” program teaches you how to exercise in your own home, utilizing common household items.  This fun, interactive presentation will prepare attendees to get creative in becoming more fit.
